Frequently asked questions
What is Lune Research?
Lune Research is an MCP server and CLI that connects AI agents such as Claude Code, Cursor, Codex and ChatGPT to peer-reviewed papers from top-tier computer science conferences. The agent searches the corpus, reads full text where it is available, follows citation trails and looks up research best practices, so its answers cite papers you can open.
Which AI apps does Lune work with?
Any app that speaks the Model Context Protocol. The install page walks through 46 apps, among them Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor, VS Code and GitHub Copilot. Apps with remote MCP support connect by URL and sign in with OAuth; the rest run the local stdio server with an access key.
Is Lune free?
The Free plan includes 10 requests a day. Pro costs $4.99 a month for 300 requests a day, and Max costs $9.99 a month for 600. Past the day's allowance, $0.99 buys 300 more requests as credits, which never expire and work on every plan.
Which papers does Lune cover?
Papers from CORE and CCF ranked computer science conferences, 2016 onward: AI and machine learning (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, ACL, CVPR and more), security (CCS, S&P, USENIX Security, NDSS), software engineering and systems (ICSE, FSE, OSDI, SOSP), data (KDD, SIGMOD, VLDB), plus WWW and STOC. Every paper has its abstract and metadata, and most have parsed full text. The full list is on the conferences page.
Does Lune share paywalled papers?
No. Lune indexes full text only where it is lawfully available and never redistributes paywalled PDFs. Public paper pages show metadata and the abstract; full text reaches your agent only through the signed-in tools.
How is Lune different from Semantic Scholar or Consensus?
Semantic Scholar is free, indexes about 237 million papers and offers a public API; Consensus answers yes-or-no questions by tallying what studies found. Lune covers far fewer papers, top-tier venues only, and reads them in full, so your agent can quote the exact sentence inside the app you already use.
How do I connect Lune?
Sign in, open the install page in the dashboard, pick your app and follow its steps. Remote apps connect to https://mcp.luneresearch.com and sign in with OAuth; local apps run npx -y @retrograde-labs/lune-mcp-server with an access key in LUNE_API_KEY.
