Decoding Islamic HCI: What Current Patterns Reveal About Future Possibilities
Jannatun Noor, Susmita Biswas
Abstract
Researchers in HCI have examined how values, challenges, and cultural contexts of Muslim communities influence technology design and use, shaping the discussion around "Islamic HCI". However, debates continue on better incorporating Islamic values into the broader discourse on technology and society. To explore this, we conducted a scoping review of HCI publications addressing religion, spirituality, and faith, both within and beyond Muslim contexts, alongside interviews with 12 researchers of this domain. We identified definitions, tensions around terminology, and epistemological considerations for advancing scholarship, integrating Islamic values, technological practices, and HCI methodologies. We find gaps between Muslim technology use and value-based work within Islamic HCI, suggesting that integrating "Islamic values" is still in progress, leaving the field emergent. We discussed patterns and future directions, and invite the HCI community to collaborate in shaping Islamic HCI into a coherent and expanding research area.
