Chouette: An Automated Cross-Platform UI Crawler for Improving App Quality

The Chouette App Crawler is a GUI crawler used at Duolingo to help accelerate the mobile and web app testing cycle. The main contributions are that it works across platforms and that it provides insights that help increase the quality of the app while reducing the human maintenance cost of traditional end-to-end testing. This is accomplished using computer vision to analyze the app screen and decide what areas to tap on. Originally conceived as a successor to Monkey Testing, Chouette Testing has evolved into a collection of features which addresses several company needs. The Chouette App Crawler has been running weekly at Duolingo for over six months, generating about 200 bug reports across Android, iOS, and Web platforms.
