# Lune vs GregoryAI

GregoryAI watches a field, indexes what appears through Crossref and ORCID, and flags what matters using machine learning. It is free, open source and yours to run. Lune is hosted, paid, and built around quoting source text.

## Choose GregoryAI if

- You want to own the pipeline and run it on your own machines.
- Monitoring a field over time matters more than answering one question.
- Free and open source under CC BY 4.0 is the deciding factor.

## Choose Lune if

- You want answers now, not a pipeline to configure.
- You need the exact sentence a claim rests on.
- You want the tools inside Claude Code or Cursor without hosting anything.

## From a question to a citation

GregoryAI: Configure the sources -> Index and filter -> Alerts and dashboards.
Lune: Search top-tier venues -> Read the full text -> Quote with a locator.

One watches a field over time. The other answers a question now.

## Line by line

| Dimension | Lune | GregoryAI |
| --- | --- | --- |
| How you run it | Hosted. Install a connector and go. | Open source on GitHub, self-hostable, CC BY 4.0. |
| What it watches | Top-tier venues, indexed as papers are accepted. | Sources you configure, synced with Crossref and ORCID. |
| How deep a citation goes | A verbatim quote and its locator, per claim. | Key takeaways extracted from what it indexed. |
| Programmatic access | An MCP server and a CLI. | Public and private APIs. |
| Price | Free for 10 requests a day, then $4.99 a month or $47.90 a year. | Free, plus whatever your hosting costs. |
| Methodology guidance | A corpus on peer review, ablations and venue choice. | Not offered. |

## Owning the pipeline

GregoryAI is open source under a permissive licence, with a public API and a dashboard, and it was built for a real problem: keeping a clinical field's literature under continuous watch. If you want to own that pipeline, nothing on our pricing page competes with running it yourself.

The cost is the usual one. Somebody configures the sources, keeps it running and tunes the relevance model. That somebody is you.

## Monitoring and answering are different verbs

A monitor's job is coverage over time: tell me when something relevant appears. It is measured on what it did not miss.

An evidence tool's job is a single question, answered now, with the source text attached. Lune is measured on whether the quote it returned supports the sentence. Both are useful. Neither substitutes for the other.

## Pricing

- Lune Free: $0, 10 requests a day, every tool
- Lune Pro: $4.99, a month or $47.90 a year, 300 requests a day
- Lune Max: $9.99, a month or $95.90 a year, 600 requests a day
- Lune Credits: $0.99, 300 extra requests, no expiry
- GregoryAI Open source: $0, CC BY 4.0, self-hosted

GregoryAI is free software; your only cost is hosting it.

## Questions

### Is Lune a GregoryAI alternative?

Not really. GregoryAI monitors a field and can be self-hosted; Lune answers questions with quoted source text and is hosted.

### Is Lune open source?

The MCP server and CLI are published on npm; the corpus and API are not open source.

### Can they run together?

Yes. GregoryAI watches your field, Lune checks what you write about what it surfaced.
