# Lune vs ChatAcademia

ChatAcademia searches eight academic databases at once, plus grant sources, and keeps the whole workflow in one place. Lune searches far fewer places and reads what it finds all the way down.

## Choose ChatAcademia if

- You want arXiv, PubMed, OpenAlex, Crossref and more behind one search box.
- Grant discovery matters as much as paper discovery.
- A lifetime license or a credit allowance suits how you buy software.

## Choose Lune if

- You want the sentence quoted, not another result list to triage.
- Your field publishes at conferences and you need that full text.
- You would rather work in your agent than in another workspace.

## From a question to a citation

ChatAcademia: Search eight databases -> Triage the results -> Cited answer.
Lune: Search top-tier venues -> Read the full text -> Quote with a locator.

More sources widen the top of the funnel. Full text deepens the bottom.

## Line by line

| Dimension | Lune | ChatAcademia |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What is indexed | Top-tier venues, most papers in full text. | 300M+ papers across eight databases, plus grants. |
| Where you use it | Any MCP client, plus a CLI and three miniapps. | The ChatAcademia web workspace. |
| How deep a citation goes | A verbatim quote and its locator, per claim. | Cited answers over the databases it searched. |
| Agent access | MCP and a CLI, on every plan. | No MCP server or public API listed on their site. |
| Grants and funding | Not offered. | Four grant databases across the US, EU and UK. |
| Entry price | $4.99 a month ($47.90 a year), or free for 10 requests a day. | $15 to $45 a month, or a lifetime license. |

## Eight databases is a real answer

Searching arXiv, PubMed, OpenAlex and Crossref at once solves a genuine problem, because a researcher who checks only one of them misses work. ChatAcademia does that, adds grant sources, and reports 26,000 active users, which is more validation than most tools in this list can show.

It also inherits what those databases hold, which is metadata and abstracts. That is enough to find a paper and not enough to quote one.

## Where the funnel narrows

Widening the top of the funnel produces more candidates. Somebody still has to read them, and with an agent in the loop that somebody is a model deciding what a paper says from its abstract.

Lune narrows the top on purpose and widens the bottom. Fewer venues, nearly every paper read in full, so the agent can answer with the sentence and say when there is not one.
